"Excellent, Watson! You scintillate today."

The first Scintillation of Scions, a Sherlockian symposium, was in August 2008. The vision for the Scintillation was to provide a family reunion of Sherlockians in an environment that would include both scholarship and frivolity, and which would encourage Sherlockians from everywhere to socialize and get to know each other. To that end, along with presentations and diversions, the Scintillation has always included a traditional English afternoon tea, honoring the Anglophile in each of us by providing a relaxing atmosphere of camaraderie.
In addition, we have established a tradition of including in our event inexperienced Sherlockian speakers as well as experienced ones in order to allow the newbies a chance to "get their [Sherlockian] feet wet." This continues in the longtime tradition of Watson's Tin Box--to support and encourage Sherlockians of all ages. One of the founders of Watson's Tin Box, Steve Clarkson, was a mentor to young Sherlock Holmes fans in the 1960s and 1970s; that tradition has been honored by Andrew Solberg through an annual Sherlock Holmes Essay Contest for seventh grade students in Howard County, Maryland. The Scintillation is our attempt to offer an opportunity for adult Sherlockians to pursue their fascination with Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson through papers and presentations.
We all have so much to offer each other in our pursuit of all things Sherlockian and Watsonian; A Scintillation of Scions strives to offer an opportunity for all to "play the game for the game's own sake.'
